Biography
David Amos serves as Associate Director of Bands in Painesville City Local Schools, is the Heritage Middle School Band Director, and Assistant Director for The Harvey Red Raider Marching Band. He teaches band in grades six, seven, and eight and serves as the co-advisor of the local chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. In 2016, Amos started a grade seven and eight general music class called Careers in Music, in which students learn about various non-performing career pathways in the music industry, with an emphasis on sound production. Students in this nine-week course learn to create songs using online software, allowing them to explore how their favorite songs are made. Amos holds a Bachelor of Music from Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music and a Master of Education in Teaching English Learners from the American College of Education. In 2017, he won the Cleveland Cavaliers’ December Head of Class Award, which recognizes outstanding Cleveland-area educators. In 2022, Amos was named to the Yamaha Music 40 Under 40 Music Educators list and was named a quarterfinalist for the Grammy Music Educator Award. He was a legacy candidate for the same award in 2023.
Before beginning his teaching career in Painesville in 2015, Mr. Amos served as Director of Bands and Choirs at David Anderson Jr./Sr. High School in Lisbon, Ohio, from 2010 to 2015. Mr. Amos also serves on the Board of Trustees for Malachi House, a nonprofit organization located on the west side of Cleveland that provides housing for impoverished individuals with terminal diagnoses under hospice care. In his spare time, he participates in and volunteers for Stonewall Sports Cleveland, an LGBT+ recreational sports league. Mr. Amos' professional memberships include OMEA, NAfME, and LCMEA.
